Rewind: A Refutation of “A Catechetical Refutation”

Oct 4, 2017

One year ago this day I published “A Refutation of ‘A Catechetical Refutation'” in which I put bullets through a seriously flawed paper published by Mr. Sean Johnson in regards to the moral permissiveness of actively attending the Novus Ordo Mass.  Mr. Johnson defends His Excellency Bishop Williamson’s advice to a woman at a conference in Mahopac, New York on June 28, 2015 in which he told her that she may continue to actively attend the Novus Ordo Mass given her circumstances.  This advice flies in the face of the Declaration of Fidelity to the Positions of the Society of St. Pius X, which was formulated by the saintly Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and required to be signed by candidates to the priesthood in SSPX seminaries.  Here is the relevant passage:

“I shall never advise anyone in a positive manner to take an active part in such a Mass (i.e., the Novus Ordo Mass).”

It has now been well over two years since Bishop Williamson gave that advice and ’til this day he has not publicly retracted it.  Most of the Resistance priests, who now form part of the False Resistance, have publicly refused to hold His Excellency accountable.  Rather, some have spoken to His Excellency privately and were satisfied with his response.  Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer gave a sermon in which he recounted a recent conversation he had with Fr. Francois Chazal in which Fr. Chazal said that Bishop Williamson explained to him that those in invincible ignorance are not guilty of sin for actively attending the Novus Ordo Mass.  However, Fr. Pfeiffer rightly responded that this is not what Bishop Williamson said in the Mahopac conference.  Clearly the woman to whom His Excellency gave his advice was not in invincible ignorance by the very fact that she expressed concern regarding her active attendance at the Novus Ordo Mass during the week.  This was the perfect opportunity for His Excellency to tell her the truth and keep the line of the Archbishop.  Instead, His Excellency told her that she may continue to actively attend the Novus Ordo Mass given her circumstances.  Very sad.

Please support the likes of Frs. Pfeiffer, Hewko, Rafael, and Cardozo in publicly speaking out against Bishop Williamson’s advice and holding him accountable.  The issue of active attendance at the Novus Ordo Mass is essential to the fight for Catholic Tradition and being faithful to the Archbishop.  We cannot let this issue go.  His Excellency must publicly retract his words and return to the line of the Archbishop on this matter.
