Everyone is familiar with the Leonine prayers said after Low Mass, including the short prayer to St Michael.

We would like to focus on a longer version of the St Michael prayer that has been approved by Pope Leo XIII, which we note is published in the 1957 Raccolta (Benzinger Brothers, taken from the 1950 official edition “Enchiridion Indulgentiarium – Preces et Pia Opera”), page 339 (section 446).

Recently we came across a version of the prayer that did not match the prayer referenced above.

The version that we came across is longer and contains the following sentence:

In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered.

So, we wondered, why was the prayer quite different from the 1957 Raccolta?

We had learned that the St Michael’s prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII and published in his Motu Proprio of September 23, 1888.  However, the Motu Proprio is not available on the Vatican website, so we were unable to verify what the original prayer stated.

We found the longer version of the prayer in two earlier editions of the Raccolta.

The 1910 Raccolta, 6th Edition, available here pg 195, Prayer #292.

The 1908 Raccolta (a friend provided us with a pdf – available here ), has the prayer on pg 264 Prayer #292.

There is also an article discussing it on the FSSP website http://kwtraditionalcatholic.blogspot.ca/2011/09/prayers-to-st-michael-archangel.html

Note also that there is an even longer version of the prayer, but it is a prayer intended to be used by priests for exorcisms. This one is not recommended for the laity.

Our conclusion is that the prayer printed in the earlier editions of the Raccolta is likely to be closer to what was written by Pope Leo XIII. We ask: Why was the prayer shortened and why was the sentence italicized above left out of the later edition of the Raccolta?

As many of you may already know, Our Lady of Good Success prophesied a very dark time for the Church, in which we now live, to Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.  At a time when the Angelus Magazine, published by the SSPX U.S. District, was still worthy of being read, an informative article was written by Fr. Andreas Mahlmann, SSPX, and Elini Felinska on Our Lady under this title.  You can read it here.  I also recommend the books published by Tradition in Action and the DVD sold by the Our Lady of Good Success Apostolate.

Our Lady of Good Success Mission in Toronto is so blessed to be served by priests of the SSPX-Marian Corps who themselves have a special devotion to Our Lady under this title.  As a matter of fact, Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer and Fr. David Hewko visited Quito, Ecuador last February and celebrated Mass under the miraculous statue completed by Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael and St. Francis of Assisi.  You may watch a YouTube video of that visit below.

Our Lady Good Success, pray for us!

As the world gets worse each day and as the situation of the Catholic Church has become more disastrous under the pontificate of Pope Francis, it becomes easier to despair that there is no way out of this mess.  Humanly speaking, one may be correct; however, we have the promise of Our Lady of Fatima that Her Immaculate Heart will triumph.  Our Lady of Good Success brings the same message of hope.  Let us never forget then that no matter how bad things get, Our Lord is in total and complete control.  When He so decides, His and our Mother will intervene.  What we are asked to do in the meantime is to weather this storm by keeping the Faith; the light will shine again one day.

Let us avoid the temptation of falling into Sedevacantism or into the hands of the conciliar church.  We must keep on the straight and narrow path as exemplified by the saintly Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, whose memory and mission the SSPX-Marian Corps Toronto carries forward.

A beautiful prayer and meditation at this unprecedented time in history is Psalm 73, which foreshadowed the intense persecution Holy Mother Church is currently undergoing.  With the Psalmist, let us cry out to God to take us out of this crisis.

In April of 2013, Fr. Daniel Themann, SSPX, gave a conference at St. Mary’s, Kansas.  The conference was entitled “Resistance to What?”.  It was an attack on the public resistance, offered by His Excellency Bishop Richard Williamson and several SSPX priests who have been or are on the verge of being kicked out of the SSPX, against the new direction of the SSPX championed by His Excellency Bishop Bernard Fellay.  As the title clearly states, Fr. Themann is of the position that nothing has substantially changed in the SSPX that would warrant a public resistance.  In response to this conference, the December 2013 Supplementary Issue of the Recusant publishes an excellent, thorough refutation of Fr. Themann’s arguments.  We at the SSPX-Marian Corps Toronto now challenge Fr. Daniel Themann to respond to this refutation.

Father, since you seem so confident of your position, please do us the favour and defend your arguments against the wounds inflicted on them by this refutation.

The SSPX died on July 14, 2012.  Listen to Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer in this short extract of a sermon given on December 14, 2013 in London, England.  The spirit of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre lives on in the SSPX-Marian Corps.
