The Right Rev. Dr. Andriy Chirovsky, S.Th.D., Founding Director of the The Metropolitan Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, now located at St. Michael’s College of the University of Toronto, and current pastor of St. Michael Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona, was ordained a priest by Josyf Cardinal Slipyj on June 8, 1980. I asked him to watch Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer’s recent conference on Ambrose Moran and provide any comments regarding support or opposition to his claims. Fr. Chirovsky was gracious enough to do so and provided the following comments as part of a response he sent to me via e-mail:
“As to ‘Archbishop’ Moran, I can assure you that he was not consecrated to the episcopate by Josyf Cardinal Slipyj. I was in Rome 1974-76 at Cardinal Slipyj’s Seminary. I personally knew all three bishops consecrated in secret by Cardinal Slipyj (all three now deceased): Iwan Choma, Stepan Czmil and Lubomyr (later Cardinal)* Husar. I also knew Cardinal Slipyj’s actual coadjutor and successor, Myroslav Ivan Cardinal Lubachivsky.
“The very fact that he dared to sign the antimension of Josyf Cardinal Slipyj with his own name (when it had already been signed by Cardinal Slipyj) is an act of desecration of the antimension, a cloth with relics in it which is akin to the altar stone in the Latin Rite. No Catholic Bishop would have the effrontery to do so to such a holy object.”
I thank Fr. Chirovsky for providing this first-hand knowledge against the claim made by Ambrose Moran that he was consecrated a bishop by Josyf Cardinal Slipyj and the subsequent denouncing of the claim that the same Cardinal gave Ambrose Moran an antimension as a remembrance of that consecration.
If you would like to contact Fr. Chirovsky, please do so at the following:
The link at the bottom shows exactly whom Cardinal Slipyj consecrated as bishop and when. The three secretly consecrated bishops mentioned above are listed, but there is no Ambrose Moran.
