Fr. David Hewko Speaks Out against the “Resignationist” Theory

In the sermon linked below starting at 48 minutes, Fr. David Hewko speaks out against the “Resignationist” theory and calls it “absurd”.

1. Father states that the term “munus” (office) needs to be clearly defined.

The term is defined in both the 1917 and 1983 Codes of Canon Law.  See pages 2 and 3 of my paper “Benedict Is the True Pope!”.  The term “ministry” on the other hand is not defined in either Code.  You may also find here an extensive study on the two terms by Br. Alexis Bugnolo.

2. Father states that Benedict XVI recognizes Jorge Bergoglio as pope.

The term “pope” as used by Benedict XVI in reference to Jorge Bergoglio needs to be understood in a qualified sense.  Benedict XVI renounced the active exercise of the ministry, that is, the government of the Church.  Meanwhile, he retained the office and the passive exercise of the ministry.  See here for a diagram.  Because he renounced the active exercise of powers that belong to his own office, he calls that person who exercises them “pope”.  Big deal.  It is still Benedict XVI who has the charism of infallibility and universal and supreme jurisdiction over the whole Church because these belong to the office.

3. Father states that he is sure Archbishop Lefebvre would not hold to the “Resignationist” theory.  Why?  Because there were those in the 1970s who held that the true pope was being held in a dungeon and that the visible one was an imposter; Archbishop rejected this.  Is Father really comparing a public act on the part of Benedict XVI, which is available for everybody to read and in which he clearly retained the office, to some conspiracy theory and then using that poor comparison as a ground for why Archbishop Lefebvre would surely reject the “Resignationist” theory?  That’s not very convincing!

The reality is that Benedict XVI is the true pope. Father needs to accept that, and so does the rest of the Catholic Resistance.

  1. It is now important to investigate the actual statements of Archbishop LeFebvre which have been placed on this post and also others that are not available here and are also thought provoking in this battle that we face in recognizing who is the legitimate pope and who is not. Anything short of fighting this battle is a Catholic dereliction of duty, and all those who seek to undermine these efforts are abusing their power for whatever personal reasons are their motives in this strange and harmful endeavor to suppress the TRUTH.

  2. This needs to be understood. Please correct me if I am wrong. Regarding the quotes stated previously here on to this post, I do not recall these most needed quotes of Archbishop Lefebvre being provided on the forum that would not allow you,Tony LaRosa, to debate; this failure to help many others to be edified and to provide a most fruitful debate as this would have been, is what many traditional and resistance Catholics would benefit from. The faithful need to have all that GOD has given to FULLY KNOW BY WAY OF EVIDENCE. Is jorge bergoglio the true pope who is bad, or is he the counterfeit pope.
If these words of Archbishop LeFebvre have indeed been omitted, then this serves to place us in the hands of the wolves, and if it were possible, to further the means for the elect to be seduced.

  3. ”It is possible we may be obliged to believe this pope is not the pope. For 20 years Mgr. Castro de Mayer and I preferred to wait. . . I think we are waiting for the famous meeting in Assisi, if God allows it.” – Archbishop LeFebvre’s words here are published in the ”Angelus” ”TALKS GIVEN BY ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE ON MARCH 30 AND APRIL 18. 1986”

OUR ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE who is OUR saintly leader in the times in which God placed him, did indeed leave us all that we need to know by logical extension as we are blessed to be able to apply the Archbishop’s wisdom to our times of bergoglio and Pope Benedict; again if we follow the Archbishop’s wisdom and guidance and by logical extension are not blind and deaf according to our own pride and gross lack of humility, we can surely figure out what God has given us in this evil age, and therefore not shun blessings we have been given by GOD, OUR BLESSED MOTHER, MARY, and especially those we have received through Archbishop Lefebvre,
PRAISE, HONOR, AND GLORY TO GOD for all His blessings at this point in salvation history.

  4. Taken from ”The Angelus Online” entitled ”TALKS GIVEN BY ARCHBISHOP MARCEL LEFEBVRE ON MARCH 30 AND APRIL 18, 1986”- ”Now I don’t know if the time has come to say that the Pope is a heretic; I don’t know if it is the time to say that. You know, for some time many people, the sedevacntists, have been saying ”there is no more pope,” but I think because it was not sure, it was not evident, it was very difficult to say that the Pope is a heretic, the Pope is apostate. But I recognize that slowly, very slowly, by the deeds and acts of the Pope himself we begin to be very anxious.” – Archbishop

We must not fail to recognize that OUR SAINTLY ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE did not live in the times which are upon us of jorge bergoglio and Pope Benedict.

  5. OUR saintly Archbishop Lefebvre aslo stated this, ”While we are certain that the faith the Church has taught for 20 centuries cannot contain error, we are much further from absolute certitude that the pope is truly the pope”. – Le Figaro, August 4, 1976.
We must remember that Archbishop Lefebvre never encountered what we are living regarding jorge bergoglio and Pope Benedict in the times in which he lived.

  6. Another quote of interest by OUR saintly Archbishop Lefebvre who did not live in the time of jorge bergoglio and Pope Benedict is ”Heresy, schism, ipso facto excommunication, invalidity of election are so many reasons why a pope might in fact never have been pope of might no longer be one. In this, obviously very exceptional case, the Church would be in a situation similar to that which prevails after the death of a Pontiff”. – Le Figaro, August 4, 1976

  7. Tony,
I may have placed the wrong date on the quote I sent beginning with, “Rome has lost the Faith…”
Sorry for the mistake, please correct it. It is possibly September 4, 1987. Thanks.

  8. Here is just one quote from our saintly Archbishop Lefebvre from 1979 as he did not live in the time of jorge bergoglio and Pope Benedict. “Rome has lost the Faith, my dear friends. Rome is in apostasy. It is not just words, it is not just words in the air that I say to you. It is the truth. Rome is in apostasy. One cannot have confidence any more in this world. He [the pope] has left the Church; they have left the Church; they are leaving the Church; It is sure, sure, sure!
I do not say that the pope is not the pope, but I do not say either that you cannot say that the pope is not the pope”. Archbishop Lefebvre, to his American priests, 1979.

  9. Father does not need to accept this resignationist OPINION and neither does the Catholic Resistance. And given the resistance do not maintain the Catholic Faith Whole and Inviolate and the Line of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre “under the Pontificate of Benedict XVI” as you promote on this website, you should not call yourself part of the resistance.

    • That Benedict XVI is the true pope is not an opinion. It is a fact. Fr. Hewko cannot make gratuitous statements in his sermons. He needs to back them up like those who accept Benedict XVI as the true pope have done.

      • Tony you need to keep this theory private and stop enforcing it on to Fr Hewko and the rest of the Resistance to the detriment of one’s spiritual life.

        • So let me get this straight, Fidelis. Fr. Hewko can publicly attack the “Resignationist” theory, but I cannot publicly defend it. Is this your reasoning?

        • Information as it leads to the truth is what we as true Catholics especially Traditional Catholics of the resistance are all about. We fight for the truth, and this is not ”enforcing it on to Fr. Hewko” as he and all should keep an open mind and follow the truth wherever it may lead. A mindset that the truth is a ”detriment” is false. We must shout it from the rooftops as to do otherwise IS the true ”detriment to one’s spiritual life”.

    • Who are you to have the power to determine that someone is or is not correct while it is nothing more than your opinion and that you have the power of superior opinion in that you are the one who gets to ”call” WHO IS OR IS NOT PART OF THE RESISTANCE. You are bloated with self righteousness as you have put yourself above others and you should not place your opinions above those of others given that this is pure hypocrisy as you make it seem as though you believe that you own the Resistance.

      • Dear Faithful CATHOLICS of Tradition,

It is getting a bit too muddled these days as to who owns / leads the resistance. PLEASE, I beg you to consider the following before we need to label traditional Catholics anew with the label ”resignationists”.
I am increasingly trying to keep up with the ever expanding labels. I am wondering who it
is / was who coined the name resistance in the first place; who are they who were previously welcomed to be part of the resistance, who have unfortunately (or maybe not) now fallen away and so had to be labeled as disqualified members of the true resistance and have been thrown into the fake reisistance.; who gets to point the finger at so and so as now having left the true resistance and thereby shamefully removed because so and so is now referred to with disdain and contempt for now being a card carrying member of the fake resistance; who has the list of those who are still part of the resistance; who has the list of those who are no longer welcomed as part of the resistance; can we go back and forth as we choose, or is there an individual or a committee to decide this; and what are the rules for all this.
PLEASE could we at least figure out the main systems OF TRUE AND FAKE RESISTANCE before we add the shameful class of ”RESIGNATIONISTS ”.

        • I think that God asks us now to return to the true Tradition of the Church, and to continue this Tradition of the Church, to renew families, to renew society and the Church also—a true renovation. I think that this is a great grace for us to remain in this spirit—this Catholic spirit.

It is not my orientation, my attitude—I say many times to the seminarians in Ecône, and in Ridgefield, and everywhere in our seminaries: “Don’t say, ‘We follow Mgr. Lefebvre,’ no! Why Mgr. Lefebvre? He’s no saint! But you follow Jesus Christ and the Tradition of the Church. You remain Catholic! What more do you want? No other thing!” I refuse to say, “I am the chief of the people who follow tradition.” No, no, no, no! I am a Catholic bishop, no more, and I continue my work to preach Catholic doctrine. I do my work to prepare Catholic priests, and through them, the Catholic faithful, and no other thing. No! Don’t say “the doctrine of Mgr. Lefebvre.” I have no doctrine. I have no new teaching. My teaching is that of the Church, the teaching of the Catholic Church and the catechism of the Council of Trent. That is very important—to remain in the true way—and not to give the impression that you have founded a new Church. That is what the Modernists are doing—they build a new church. We don’t build a new church; we follow the Catholic Church of always.
